Chopin, Rehearsal

Choreography from Xin Peng Wang

Music from Frédéric Chopin

Danced by Polina Semionova & Dmitry Semionov

Premiere: June 30, 2018

Internationale Ballettgala XXVII

Dortmund Opera

For the "Internationale Ballettgala XXVII" Xin Peng Wang is currently working on a new creation to the music of Frédéric Chopin.

"His music is brilliant, a balancing act between the white and the black keys. Every note is bringing us closer to the heavens. And its possible to fail on each and every one of them", Xin Peng Wang admits. "To engage with Chopins music and create something with it was a matter close to my heart for a long time. Now the moment is finally here."

Xin Peng Wang is choreographing his new creation for the exceptional ballerina Polina Semionova and her brother Dmitry Semionov. "It makes me extremly happy to be able to work with these two fantastic artists. Together we approach Chopin, discover and redefine him."

The premiere of the new creation will take place in the course of the "Internationale Ballettgala XXVII" on June 30th 2018 in the Dortmund Opera.

Ballet from Xin Peng Wang

Music from Sergej Rachmaninow and Peter I. Tschaikowsky

In his new creation Xin Peng Wang risks a glimpse behind the curtain of artistic creation. He takes the audience on a tour of his inner struggle to find the mystic moment between action and standstill, between noise and silence – effect and affect. “Sometimes” says Wang “you have to pause and think about what you do and why. That’s part of the responsibility we take on by taking our first breath and which we can’t deny even after we'll take our last one.”

Xin Peng Wang interacts in this cooperation with the Opus Magnum of the famous composer Johann Sebastian Bach. He transforms it into a surface where the baroque capacity to suffer meets the pressure of modern life. The passion of christ becomes the passion of human kind.

A very interesting cooperation between the singers of the Bachchor, the musicians of the live orchestra and the young dancers of Ballett Dortmund.

Goethe’s drama „Faust“ starts with a bet between god and the devil. Is man just a a victim of his own instincts and passion or does he knows of the good, the true? Will it succeed to corrupt him through and through? Faust is a famous wise man, who has researched anything the world can offer. However, he is not happy nor satisfied. He wants to explore the last secrets of creation. Like Faust, we also seek complete knowledge nowadays, but we need to be aware of the price we might have to pay for this.  Knowledge is based on conscience. This is the crucial and substantial test for all of us, over and over again...

Premiere: November 8, 2014, Theater Dortmund

On July 28, 1914 two gunshots fired in Sarajevo changed the world. Visions of the apocalypse in the decade before World War One were captured by Thomas Mann in his benchmark novel. An X-ray detects a small spot on the lung of young Hans Castorps. Though benign and not dangerous, it affords him the opportunity to escape his surroundings. He spends seven years in the striking landscape of the Swiss Alps, among suffering and dying patients in a tuberculosis sanitarium. He lives amongst the moribund. He learns that his increasing interest in death is in fact his hunger for life, and that illness is rather a cry for love. Until those gunshots are fired in Sarajevo. They also change his world.
